Thanks for the replies!

Perhaps I should also ask whether it is the XF86Config or the
XF86Config-4 file I should be looking at.  Looking at my earlier
question it appears I have posted the XF86Config file.  Here is the
XF86Config-4 file which I THINK is the one I should be worrying about.
I can't see any modelines greater than 1024x768 and nor can I see the
expected 800x600 or 640x480 options which I assume are needed for games
which attempt to set the resolution to these.
I guess I may need to read up on the format of modelines.

Suggestions?
