You don't by chance know the model number on the soundcard? Typing
'lspci' in a terminal may give you this information if you don't have
it already. ESS chips are normally supported okay; you just need to
model number to know which driver to load.
As for the modem, if you try running kppp (what's the Gnome equivalent
the rest of you fullas?), it should give you the option to set up the
modem. If it's a serial modem, it should be detected on /dev/ttyS0,
/dev/ttyS1 or some such. If it's USB, I'm not sure where it shows up.
