I too am a little confused by the original post.
Forking distributions to split GUIs from CLIs makes no sense, since 
distributions arent really defined by their content, more by their package 
installer and other helpful tools. I have a Gentoo desktop, and a Gentoo 
server... I made that choice, and the distribution certainly didnt force me 
one way or the other.

Having recently installed Ubuntu as a server, I found that it's simply 
Debian. I am impressed at its Live CD tho, and I think it'll make a great 
beginner desktop.


Anyway, Linux means the freedom to choose, so if anyone wants to fork a 
distribution and focus on one UI, then they can, and if we like it, we'll 
use it. However, I am perfectly happy with the current choices.
