Great news IMO.
The FOSS report, (on take up of OpenSource in Europe govt & corporate a while
back) included results from a survey from IT managers on which OS they were
running. They presented the results, which included the "other" box being
ticked and Red Hat entered. Linux was one of the unchecked options. The mgrs
did not know that Red Hat was a Linux distro. But they were happy about using
it.
Personally if people use it coz it works & don't even know (or care) what is
under the hood, I think it is great. A good measure of success.
People (like most Luggites) who philosophically prefer Linux/Open Source will
tend to use it even when it is not as good as alternatives, we put up with
minor irritations (dependency hell, etc) coz we feel sorry for Bill & the
amount of tax he has to pay.
If casual users are happy with some form of Linux, not choosing it because of
any personal/philosophical preferences, that suggests it is a superior product,
used simply because it actually does the job better. Good stuff!!
Go the M distro (& the U one, and all the others!!! :-) Get Linux on the
computers of casual desktop users!!
