It depends on what he is anticipating them to support, and the SLA's
around said support.
I worked with Lantech a number of years ago and found that although they
were small they did work hard to deliver. Unfortunately the product they
were working on was inherently faulty (no guessing) so they had a bad
run with it.
I cannot vouch for recent times though. The best advice is that he
should put together a comprehensive list and description of what he is
wanting to do, and what he does NOT want covered, and ask someone to put
that into an RFP to test the market. That way he will have a better idea
what can and can not be covered. It also allows him to compare in-house
support with the vendors, which is probably what he really wants to
assess.
ps - I could assist if he and you wish, to ensure he does come up with
realistic things.
