[wellylug] Samba Issue

I've noticed things can get confused if there is something talking on
private addresses that can't be reached.

I had a machine with a couple of VMWare interfaces that would broadcast
on the addresses set up for vmware on the local network. Possibly this
screwed things up?
I stopped the machine in question broadcasting, and also specified a
REJECT rule on the gateway for outgoing RFC 1918 addresses. This seems
to have resolved the issue.

I'd definately put an egress rule in on your firewall anyway, as private
stuff shouldn't be leaking out, plus it can speed things up (as can
setting up reverse DNS for RFC 1918 addresses, whether in use or not).

Cheers,

Tim.
