Ubuntu now running great on my laptop after overcoming a couple of ACPI
hurdles. With other distros I didn't use ACPI as it wouldn't load so I
used apm instead but with Ubuntu this caused a weird problem where the
system would drastically slow down after running for a while (I think
the cpu cooling wasn't working properly and was forcing it into a safety
go-slow mode). I solved this by downloading a bios update from Toshiba
which made it possible to load the ACPI, this however caused a conflict
with my lucent winmodem that would make the system lock-up when I tried
to use dialout, but this was also easily fixed by adding a pci=noacpi in
my boot loader. Having got these issues out of the way it's running
superbly, performance is good even on a P2 400MHz. Hotplugging and
auto-mounting work great out of the box for usb keys and digital cameras
- no setup required and has access to thousands of deb packages. I can
highly recommend this one for people to try.
