My guess would be it's samba and it's not the first time I've seen weird
things. Consider a directory full of hundreds of files called
'[0-9]{4}-.*' exported with Samba. In my situation, 'net starting' the
share and typing 'dir 325*' in the shared directory (in a command shell)
returns really screwed up filenames. Definitely something wrong there.
