In addition, wouldn't that imply that using something like VNC would
require you to have two Office licenses (potentially), since you may be
using Office from your VNC client as well as locally on the Windows host
(albeit probably not at the same time)?

The disadvantage AFAICS with VNC is the single remote connection limit -
or does it do something clever to allow multiusers?

Anyway, license concerns aside, we use rdesktop and Windows TS and it
works very well. Hence my original recommendation. It's not free, but
neither is commercial Wine or emulators like VMware.
