Thanks Ewen, the info supercedes what I had, kernel 2.2 RAID1 only read from a
single drive, the new RAID1 with read balancing should approach RAID0 read
performance, but with data redundancy. I will loose some space, but that
shouldn't be a huge deal.

Yep. For now I'd like to just do it in software. It should be adequate on two
SATA drives.
