E1 is what's used here. Also known as a PRI or Primary Rate Interface.
Related to BRIs (Basic Rate Interface), both of which are from the ISDN
family.

More commonly, people call E1's E1 or PRI, and BRI's BRI or ISDN. Even tho
a PRI is ISDN. Go figure.

There's also a bit of POS (Packet Over SONET) around, I believe. Plus the
usual Ethernet over fibre/copper for MANs like Citylink, and prolly a
bunch of others.
