I have an old Brother HL-660, which I'm very pleased with. If you can
find one second-hand, I'm pretty sure it will cost less than $100. It
works fine with Linux, using the HP (PCL) emulation mode.

I can't see one on trademe right now, but there is an earlier model
which might do the job just as well:

If you insist on a brand new one, linuxprinting.org is your best
source of information about Linux support. The 5140 is not listed in
their database, although the 5040 is, and it is listed as working
perfectly. You might find you need to download the latest drivers
from that site, depending on your distro/printing engine.

If you would consider second hand, check out RemarkIT (opposite the Westpac
stadium)
They have a pile of used HPs and others. Many are equipped with network
attachment cards.
Don't know about printer prices, but some monitors I bought there were cheap
($10 +GST for 14" in quantity)
