Read... and watch! As part of that article they published a cool movie
showing an Intel and an AMD system running Quake3. With the Intel P4, they
removed the heatsink and you could see the game visibly slow down to a
halt over a few seconds. Their infrared thermometer showed the CPU
temperature increase initially and then flatten out.
They did the same thing with an Athlon - within a matter of seconds, the
CPU was smoking, literally, and caused motherboard damage. The temperature
rose over 300 degrees (C or F, can't remember).
Neat video - I might even still have it lying around somewhere...
