Very nice.  I'll give this a try.

For what it is worth, bash tab-completion is programmable to do
similar stuff.  For example, you can set it up to give you a list of
available options for a command when you tab (e.g. apt-get <tab> <tab>
would give you a list of update, upgrade, remove etc.).  It's not
exactly what you are intending to do, I don't think, but it's darn
handy.
