Ironically, the answer you seek is in the less man page :-)

The behaviour you dislike is a feature of less rather than a feature of
the terminal program.  It's just that if your terminal does not support
saving/restoring then less doesn't do it.

If less is started with the -X option, it doesn't attempt to do the
save/restore thing even if the terminal supports it.  If you always
want -X enabled then just put this in you .bashrc:

  export LESS="-X"
