There was a nice long thread(or maybe a few heh) a month or two ago about the
LifeView FlyVideo 3000(philips saa7134) card and recording using mencoder, with
example mencoder lines and whatnot too.

Personally I have the saa7134 which works nicely and is well supported except
for the occasion annoyance of it changing to static on the change of channel and
can take a bit to get back, but for me that isn't very often(once a weeks top,
more like once in every 2).

I use this for mencoder and it uses ~75% of my AMD 1800+XP producing a good
quality file of respectable file size.

mencoder -tv
channels=6:driver=v4l2:width=640:height=480:input=0:device=/dev/video0 tv://
-ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1200:vhq:vqmin=2 -oac mp3lame
-lameopts cbr:br=128 -vf pp=fd -endpos 00:05:00 -o testing1.avi
