hi all,
Has anyone read about how cd writing is now stuffed under 2.6.8.1?
http://lwn.net/Articles/98379/
It means that you can only record cdr's as the root user. :-(( I hate
having to su - into root. :-(. It's also annoying as other users who
don't have admin access can't login.
Does anyone know of what group(s) are working to fix it, and when a fix
may be expected?
When I visited the cdrecord site
(http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/cdrecord.html), it just has a notice about the bug, but nothing about fixing it. :-(
I was thinking,
in theory, you could make the kernel permit cd writing for a certain
group (say cdwriter). Then, any users who are safe to use the cd writer
could be added to this group by the admin. Then, the security problem is
still potentally avalible, but the risk is dramaticly decreased, and it
will suit most people.
Anyone fancy some kernel hacking? ;-)
