I just placed every package that puts files under /usr/X11R6/ on hold:
dpkg -S /usr/X11R6 | sed 's/, / hold\n/g' | sed 's/:.*$/ hold\n/' |
dpkg --set-selections
After you do that, none of those packages will be updated when running
a dist-upgrade. Explicitly running something like 'apt-get install
xserver-xfree86' is the only way to update them while they're held
back.
