If you use debian(Maybe others too?) this might help, have a look in `which 
sensible-browser` no idea if WM goes by this or not.
I changed mine to basically just: firefox -a firefox -remote "openURL($1,new-tab)"

You can use the mozex extension(I believe there are a few others like it) for 
firefox that allows you to specifiy custom handles for the protocoles(Eg your 
mailto://).
