I'd recomend Mandrake to newbie. It's incredibly easy to use.

I installed Mandrake 9.0 on my friends pc. His computer skill is
basicly, point & click - windows internet, email, media player.

Once I had installed Mandrake, I had to show him nothing. He simply sat
down and started using it. A day later he was like 'Wow! It hasn't
crashed! Windows would have crashed by now!'
