The two main forks are the Debian/apt fork and the 
RedHat/rpm fork. There are source forks, like Gentoo.

Ubuntu belongs to the Debian fork.

All installs of Linux require at least a Debian partition 
and a Debian swap partition. This reasonably straightforward 
and providing you have some space on your HDD, reasonably 
problem free.

What do you have and what do you want to achieve? Have you 
already got a distro installed?
