Not a GIS guru, but if you mean composite as in splat on top of one
another, ImageMagick's composite command may be what you want:

If you mean join into a sequential series of images (a "movie", if I
may be permitted to use the technical term :-) mpeg_encode, or
alternatively mplayer's encoding tools, may do the job.  ImageMagick
also has some capabilities in this area (animated GIFs, mng images,
MPEGs), with the exception that the Debian version does not support
encoding to MPEG.
