I had very similar experiences with Mandrake 10.1, SuSE 9.1/9.2 and Fedora 3.

They all had slightly different problems but all pertained to the SATA driver.
Ubuntu worked perfectly however. SuSE have released a fix for 9.2 (which I
haven't tried) which was to download a small iso, burn that & boot off that,
then load the normal CD1 or DVD to continue installing.

So from my perspective is was easier to find something that worked out of the
box that wrestle with Linux drivers. I figure with the next release of each
distro it will be resolved & Ubuntu solved my immediate problem....
