What's your internet connection like?  If you've got decent broadband 
then a net install works well with debian.  The last time I installed 
debian, I did a sarge install with the netinst image from here: 
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

I think the initial download was around 150MB.  Then I downloaded a 
further 800-900MB of stuff from linux.citylink.co.nz while I slept..
