Strangely enough the PSU is pretty clean, no layers of dust, no bursting
capacitors (no spider webs :-) - postmortem on second supply shows damage
in the same area, same coil damaged and the top blown off the one IC on the
board (TIP221P rated for 230V+/- 15%, switches the AC input).
Tentatively plugged in another PSU, everything fires up ok and it booted up
SuSe no trouble (see I got it back on topic ;-).
These are "Power Man FSP235-GI" PSUs, quick look on the web didn't find a
huge rash of complaints about them.
Same power strip with circuit breaker normally runs my other computers
(which were off at the time). I think it really must be a fault with this
particular model, some startup condition design flaw exacerbated by
everything being completely discharged and cold (maybe one of the small
electrolytic capacitors breaks down).
