The '$' is a prompt - what Simon wanted you to type is:

###echo "Hello World" | lpr###  omitting the '###' characters, when you 
see the '$' prompt.

Whenever you see a line starting with $ or # (or even > ) then this 
usually means the shell prompt. You don't type this. Hope this makes more 
sense now.
