My apologies. The $ sign is the command prompt, and I often include it
to mean 'type the stuff after the $ in a terminal'. This is useful for
showing what to type and what you should see after pressing enter.

Eg.

$ echo "Hello World"
Hello World


In this case, it was not needed. Sorry.
