There is an adjustment wizard in KDE for doing this.

Also, when installing SuSE and Mandrake (dunno about other distros) you 
can set that sort of stuff at the same stage as when choosing monitor, 
video card, colour depth, refresh rate, and screen resolution.

In YaST select the hardware module, and then select "Graphics card and 
monitor". Then click "change".

Now you should have the "SaX2: Extended X11 Configuration" module running.

Select "Desktop" and "Geometry".

Make your changes there and click "save". The rest of the process should 
be straight forward.

I dunno about other distros.
