Well, that's a decent approach. I don't know what smoothwall does, but
IPCop (the fork of smoothwall[1]) sets up IPSec for you, presumeably
painlessly.
Which puts us right back in to the space of "I have some dedicated
networking equipment to run a VPN on" :-) and that's where IPSec can
work well. Not sure about NAT, but I expect IPCop setup covers that OK.

[1] I'm not quite sure of the history between smoothwall and IPCop, so
if someone knows I'd appreciate a good update.
