Have you tried using the kppp wizard to set up the connection, rather
than doing it manually?  You should be able to select from a list of
NZ ISPs, including Paradise.

I don't use kppp any more, but the wizard did work correctly for me
when I did.  I had to make a small change to the timeout before
dialling (after reset), but that was due to my modem being a piece of
rubbish.
