try booting the kernel with the options: noapic nolapic acpi=off

Some or all of these should disable the problematic features.

you can add these by appending them in the grub config file, or hit esc 
or whatever to get to grub console on boot, and manually edit the kernel 
line - just add the options to the end.

LILO config would be similar.
