Been giving suspend to RAM (sleep) and suspend to disk (hybernate) a
try on the Ubuntu Hoary 2.6.10 kernel. It does dramatically reduce
startup time although it's still in development and people have had
varied results on different hardware. Here's the results on my old
Toshiba P2 laptop:
Time taken for fully loaded Gnome desktop (auto login):
Resume from sleep = 10 seconds.
Resume from hybernate = 48 seconds.
Normal full boot = 2 min 25 seconds.
Sleep mode seems to use about 1% of battery per hour. Wakes up from
sleep when the laptop lid is opened although need to press Fn + F5 to
turn display back on.
