David,
It is possible that it is a newish feature, as I always compile the
latest version of mplayer from source, but certainly I see this
behaviour here - I have my Linux-runnin' XBox ripping a DVD to a file
with mencoder over the LAN, and MPlayer on my main machine will happily
play the partial file. (or vice versa if I am ripping on my main machine
and playing on my XBox).
Typically I compile my mplayer from source, and don't use the
distro-packaged versions, so it is possible I have never noticed that
older mplayer versions don't support useful features like this.
