Yes, I tried using tail -f at the time, but thats a really nasty hack IMO. 
Tail continually polls the file and it's also not really designed for 
binary streams. I seem to recall it kinda worked tho but there must have 
been some other issue since I didn't end up using it. Wish I could 
remember...

Anyway, haven't had a chance to try out mplayer again just yet. Fingers 
crossed...
