The problem here is that we aren't talking "computer terms" - we are 
talking "communications terms" and the definition is quite clear.

If you like, you can consider bytes to be 'computer related' and bits to 
be 'information/communications related'. A kilobyte is indeed 1024 bytes, 
but a kilobit is 1000 bits. Or as Leo's URL mentions, the even more 
correct term for 1024 bytes is a kibibyte.

Of course, his URL also implies that the 'computer' terms for megabyte and 
gigabyte that we use on a daily basis are incorrect - I do what I can to 
help by using the symbol 'GiB' (gibibyte) when talking about 
1024*1024*1024 bytes but I try not to get into an argument about it :)
