Gentoo needs alot of time/patience. The worst part of Gentoo is the 
installation because you have to actually read the install docs, there 
is no install menu program so it is a little time consuming but the end 
result is worth it.
If you're using dial-up (like me) installing packages can take a few 
days to get a GUI system operational but you get a rock solid system.
Start off with a stage 3 install to get started since you get started a 
little earlier, when you are familiar enough with Gentoo try a stage 1/2 
install
