As long as you carefully follow the instructions and know your hardware 
well you should be fine.
The only 'gotcha' I am aware of is their instructions for using 
mirrorselect - do not use mirrorselect the way that they tell you how to 
(as it will corrupt your /etc/make.conf), you can safely install without 
running it anyway.
