Thanks David.  I have tried those.  Perhaps I am just a bit dull, but
I still couldn't figure out what called what.  Redhat give some info
about what their system does, but it's sort of generic and I don't
have (or want to, really) a Fedora install to poke around in for the
detail.  LinuxFromScratch also has some info, but their approach,
IMHO, does not look particularly satisfactory.

Anyhow, I might try installing Sarge with udev and playing, which is
often the best thing when you have RTFM and not understood.
