I used XMMS (on a Sarge Notebook) for a while but found that restarts always came up with an outdated playlist which I found annoying, so I used AmaroK for quite a while, first on Xfce and recently on KDE, but found it somewhat over featured (aka bloated). Yesterday I tripped over noatun, so I'm giving that a whirl.
A feature of XMMS that AmaroK lacked was the "6db boost & Hard Limit" option which effectively ironed out the level differences between albums (I like a varied diet of music!). Noatun enables something similar in enabling the ability to run a compressor in the sound chain, so I'm giving that a whirl as well. (Being a sounddesk operator in one of my other lives I have no problems understanding compressors and tweaking them.)
