Unfortunately my mix of bleeding edge interoperating distributions all 
want to 'look after' /etc/passwd for me in different ways, so it's not 
quite as simple as it sounds. Not impossible either however...

Now if I was using the same version of just one OS everywhere, something 
like this would work perfectly I think. But it's also getting into the 
realm of what NIS etc already do.

I wonder if it's possible to port the extremely useful map_static option 
into the kernel NFS server? Hmmm....  seems a pity it's left out really.
