I'd recommend scheme mostly because of the excellent IDE, drscheme that's 
available cross-platform. Some people don't like the lisp syntax, I've 
started learning it recently and I really quite like it. It has a turtles 
teachpack as well letting you draw with a turtle which is cool for teaching 
kids (or even adults)
