Two points here.  Almost every version of locate that was not updated via a cron job would bleat at me if it was more than a week old (a good prod to fix my cron setup).  And secondly, the only time you need a bleeding edge locate database is if you are looking for a file that was made recently, but before the last time updatedb was run.  Locate is still inappropriate if updatedb runs in the wee hours and you're looking for a file that you think your compiler made for you this morning...
