[wellylug] modem and power cuts

Hi thanks for the ideas.

I'm still not there but I did discover that /dev/ttyS2 was the only dev 
that didn't have write permissions for group and other. I restored it 
for group - chmod g+w /dev/ttyS2  . Yes I had to get a book out to do 
that ;-)

No, there is no /dev/modem on this system. I did check that kppp hadn't 
had any of it's configs changed and there weren't any.

I don't understand lock files, so I was glad to see that I don't have 
the file Tony suggested.

I can't imagine how the modem could be damaged such that none of the 
users can use it but root can.

BTW When I start kppp from a terminal, both as a user and root, I get a 
line saying "couldn't find interface ppp0: no such device". This is 
presumably an irrelevance designed to confuse me, very easy to do anyway..

So any more words of wisdom will be appreciated.
