As a general pointer to all, you might not want to put any personal 
information out on the mailing list, but rather direct it only to the person 
you want to have it.

Many (perhaps all) of the mailing lists are archived and available for search.  
The idea is to build a body of knowledge so people can find answers to their 
questions - there are a lot of answers to do with running GNU/Linux on this 
mailing list, for example.

And it's not a big deal, or unusual, for someone to write a robot or spider to 
scan through the archives harvesting addresses, etc. for sale.

Treat everything you send to a mailing list as a completely public 
announcement, because it is.
