he didn't?
he brought us the gcc without which free software would not be possible
to the extent it is today[1]. the whole gnu toolchain was written because
he pushed for it to happen. 
he also brought us emacs, that ... oh wait, i ... er ... uhm, never mind.

[1] without gcc most free software today would likely be written in lisp[2].
[2] i don't think that would be such a bad thing though. lisp is a nice language
