Hi there,
I'm building a linux box for home. It's primarily meant to run oracle
+ postgres and allow me to develop my skills as a DBA, while tweaking
and playing around with web site development and general all round
technical crusading. I'm a unix devotee who has not stayed in touch
with desktop technology for some years (having worked mostly on
clustered sparc(solaris) and alpha(tru64) hosts and some intel (linux)
hosts running for big corporates).
Could you run your eyes over this hardware list and tell me if I am
falling into any major traps? The trickiest thing was to choose the
graphics card, for which the best choice seems to be nVidia GeForce
5200 (coincidentally on a parallel thread in this list!). The rest
seems to be pretty vanilla. It'll eventually have two SATA disks that
I will set up with RAID 1 if I end up storing something overly
important on it. The RAM is expensive but reliable and bloody fast
(low latency and suited for the dual channel motherboard).
Motherboard comes with on-board RAID, suits the CPU, has audio and
'wire of fire' and usb and and and...blah. It's mostly pretty vanilla
but I thought I would put it out there. Any improvements without
blowing out the cost? Anything that will not work under linux?
