okay, it's fair enough to want to patent your product, but what I
dislike is making your patent so that anyone who wants to JUST USE your
product can't.
Take DVD's - You have to buy a licence to make dvd's. Fair enough. But
to play them, you also have a licence. That's unpopular, but still fair.
However, if you then make it impossible for a individual to buy a
licence, and make no software avalible on that user's platform, it's
unfair. People buy your product (DVD), and then find to play the DVD
they must break the law, and in theory could be taken to court. Someone
has brought their product in good faith, but they find out they can't
play it!
They should do it like MP3 - Making playing MP3's free, but encoding
them costs money. I don't particulaly like that, but it's a fair enough
decision, and it lets both sides win - the patent holders get money from
encryption, plus the popularity of the product grows as anyone can play
the files.
Ideally, it should be a free open platform, regarding the amount of
money they make selling the movie, and the commonness of the format, but
the RIAA ain't exactly the most caring company around...
anyway, that's my opinion.
