People seem to attribute all sorts of stuff to the open source
philosophy (I've seen two postings recently on this list). i.e. it's
okay for me to do objectionable thing X because its part of the open
source philosophy to do that.
First of all, this is a Linux list, and not an OSS list, although we
occasionally talk about OSS issues. You don't have to be an OSS
believer to use Linux, even though Linux is open-source.
Secondly, I thought the basic idea of OSS was that you should have
access to software source code. If you're also into 'free' software
(a la GNU) then you additionally believe that access to free (libre)
software is a fundamental social right. At a stretch, you could say
that freedom to tinker with hardware is covered too. But that's it.
And despite the fact that many F/OSS enthusiasts are also interested
in wider civil rights and freedom of speech, they are separate
philosophies.
A little discussion is good, a little tolerance is good, but there are limits.
As for the particular posting, I have no great objection -- it was
more relevant than a Windows question -- but putting it in a link
instead of carrying the full text seems like a good suggestion.
