hda is your first (IDE) hard drive. It would normally have nothing to do with
your card reader. Playing with that is not a good idea. Later versions of Linux
have moved away from defining IDE drives simply as hda, hdb, etc, and have used
the more sophisticated approach you describe above.
Post what sort of card reader you have, (IDE, USB etc) & someone here should be
able to help you work out what the device is & how to mount it.

The simple way for us Mandrake users is to boot off the install disk & run the
repair. Usually fixes the silly things I manage to do to my system.
<fishing> For those that prefer to wrestle with Linux instead of use their
computer </fishing> you can try booting into failsafe mode & see if that works,
then run drakeconf in text mode to sort out the sound (ALSA = Alternative Linux
Sound Architecture) problem. If you can get to the Hutt or J'ville LUG meetings
with your system I'm sure you'll find willing help.
