Basic desktop system, single IDE hard drive, Intel chipset. A retired desktop
box that has been in the organisation since new, maintained be the same group
that did the install on it. I understand there were no hardware issues during
the install, it all went pretty much as they expected.

My preference was Mandrake/Fedora, as these are used on the site already, or I
was happy with SuSE. I was asked if Ubuntu was OK & said I didn't mind as long
as it all worked. So I got Ubuntu, & it all seems OK. They are the first Ubuntu
boxes installed at this site that I know of. 

My GIS workstation at home is running Ubuntu, so I didn't really care which
distro. I figured they could make the best call themselves to pick what would
work reliably & effectively.
